Personal Statement

Personal Statement

I like to observe the details of things around me and think about the connotations and implications behind them. Before I decided to study art, I would crouch on the ground and record the color of a pool of water in the sun. I showed extreme sensitivity to all material materials and colors. I often stare at a detail I feel interesting and begin to fantasize all the stories about it. Clothing allows me to express my perceptual view of a thing in a way that I am best at, and I try to show the world I understand. When I complete a project, I stop my mind and reflect myself. This is the way I communicate with society with the truest self.I hope to gain a more comprehensive understanding of myself as well as the fashion design industry.

Born in an artistic family, I had a close connect with art since young. My mother is a fashion buyer and I often went to different fashion stores with her, where I experienced the fashion trends in different periods and felt the true charm and charisma of fashion. That make me, to better understand customers’ specific requirements and choices in current Chinese fashion industry as well as improve my knowledge in fashion, I went to many stores for practical experience from collecting products, recommending clothes to consumers and some store management.

Under the constant influence of fashion culture, I began to understand and judge the impact of a social environment on clothing. In the country I live in, China, the fashion industry is full of prospects and waiting to be developed. We are short of designers and clients who are self-conscious and aesthetic. In a country full of cultural shock and ideological climax, the fashion industry should not be completely controlled by the stars and the media, but rather the clothes that really give the Chinese people a sense of national pride.

On the other hand, I actively participated in different kinds of activities to improve my comprehensive capabilities in the field of fashion. For example, in order to bring fashion design closer to everyday life, I set up my first fashion design club in our high school and organized many fashion shows and competitions.

I also have a strong interest in the culture of my country, I often chat with the cultural restoration master, and learn from artisanal craftsmen. Finally, I organized a small influential cultural exhibition with my partners. In the process, I felt the power of cultural background and spread the value of my own culture. I would like to study it and return to the traditional way to develop a truly suitable national clothing and to redefine concept of fashion in the public mind.

After I took the preparatory course, I felt that my work could be displayed more quickly and clearly. I learned the most important thing, autonomous learning, I found my own learning rhythm, I can more clearly through the library, exhibition, observational painting and other ways to research and explore, And will use these research to broad interpretation of their thinking about a thing. Class composed of students from different nationalities lets me feel more influence and advice from different cultures. This makes my work more meaningful and narrative, and the final result is bigger and more complete.

To me, fashion design is unique. It conveys a designer's thoughts, feelings, and cultural context she accepts. My  previous experience and study in foundation course already laid me some basic knowledge and skills in fashion design, such as strong fashion sense, good capabilities in drawing and materials arrangement, and certain knowledge of fashion industry. As a girl who likes traveling very much and has already visited more than twenty countries, I believe the rich culture and customs can give me more inspirations in fashion. Based on my understanding of Chinese traditional culture and handicrafts, I want to spread them around the world and integrate Chinese culture and western culture into my works. Therefore, I hope to explore more advanced design methods and professional knowledge in your school. If I had this rare opportunity, I would participate in different activities to explore the design of more fashion works.

Studying in St. Martin, I am looking for a platform to communicate and learn with all the gifted students. I want to put myself in a competitive and high-pressure environment, remind myself to keep an attitude and reflect on myself all the time. I hope I can understand my subject from different angles, such as space, materials, rhythm, culture and so on, and master my own style, orientation and design from a pluralistic and free teaching system.

Research on layout

The layout should help the interviewer quickly find the key points of my work. So when you play tactile project and culture swap project. Let me first identify what I want to show on each page and the emotions I express, which make sure that each page is related to each other. For example, the first page is the overall research of the project, and the second page is based on the continuing development or results of research. Let the whole collection look narrative and its own rhythm.

As I sorted out the tactile project, I found that there wasn't much in my sketch book that I would like to put into typesetting. So I sorted out more research and development and added it to sample to make the whole project more relevant. I made a new collage from a small collage that I hadn't finished before. I also found a lot of details and accidents from sketch book that I hadn't cared too much about before. The combination of what I've found and my work has worked very well. But I don't think I did very well. Because I added a different color to make the sample later, but I didn't associate the two colors very well. I was confused when I placed the last sample. Because the size of the sample is not well combined, too much will appear to be full of pictures, but if we do not put any shortcomings. So finally try to use collage to combine sample, but more disharmonious. I decided to correct it in the culture swap project.

I did a lot of research in the typesetting of culture swap. This makes it difficult for me to find the main line of my final exposition. So I looked through my sketch book and understood my research ideas at each step many times. I finally streamlined my research. Let all the research relate to the final results. So I keep adding my sample experiment to my research. Make sure you can see the origin of sample from the research behind it. Also let print and sample have a relationship, complete a conversion from 2D to 3D. In the process, I learned the concept of extracting important elements from sketch book and combining them better. In the final sample presentation, I used masks to connect all the samples and turn them into a picture created by a sample. I think this way of telling stories in sample is a better way to show them. This allows a better connection between the sample and the theme, rather than just placing the sample on the screen. But I do have some shortcomings. My control of color is not in place yet. I should jump out the color of print instead of putting all the same colors on it, which makes it impossible for print to show clearly. When I finally lay out, I should think about the relationship between colors.
